Modern Furniture Vs Vintage or Antique Furniture


In today's furniture market there really is no comparison of modern furniture VS vintage or antique furniture. Most furniture made today is made in China ,India, or Indonesia and is designed mainly to have a high look ,and a low price.  How do they achieve this? Well, they use inferior materials, such as particle board(saw dust and glue) or they use fiberboard (fibers and glue) for the structures. The interiors may have some real wood, but be assured it will be the lowest grade possible. Many of the glides and runners and moving parts are plastic. If any real good grade wood is used for veneering it will be laser cut , which will make it as thin as possible. How do they hold this together? Of course, they will use staples, that should keep it together, just about long enough for you to get it home. Once in use it will fall apart ,and you will find your self back in the market for more furniture. Don't get me wrong there are many new furniture companies who still make good furniture, if you are a multi-millionaire you can buy it. Example, a new complete dining room set with china cabinet , buffet , table and 6 chairs in solid mahogany would be around $60,000  to $70,000 plus tax. Now, antique furniture is made of real wood , and in high grades of lumber, such as mahogany, walnut, and cherry. Many of the earlier pieces will be constructed of solid cherry, or solid walnut, or solid mahogany. How are they held together? With hand cut dovetails , or machine cut dovetails, in the front and back. The interiors will even be made out of high grade lumbers, such as mahogany, walnut, and cherry. The nice thing about vintage or antique furniture is the fact that it has already proven that it can stand the test of time. Another nice feature is when you purchase vintage or antique furniture it goes up in value as time passes, modern furniture goes down right after you buy it, just like a new car does. So, buy antique furniture, save your self money, time , headache, and most importantly it is a good sound investment.

Antique Auction Buying Tips-

  • Inspect all merchandise before you bid.
  • Pay attention to the auctioneer.
  • Understand that you have about 3 seconds to decide whether to buy or not. Know in advance what you are willing to pay. If it goes over the bid amount , well it goes over it.
  • Pay attention to what is being sold.
  • Make sure you know the amount you are bidding. In most cases for example a set 6 chairs will be sold 6 times the money which means if they are at 50 dollars each your price is $300.00
  • Be prepared to take the merchandise with you ,or make arrangements to have it picked up or delivered. Bring moving blankets etc.
  • Bring a notepad , and pen to keep track of what you have purchased.
  • Know what you are bidding on, don't think you know. If your not sure it is probably best to not bid. Example if your not sure the piece is an antique , then don't buy it. Ask
